SMobile Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS)

As the demand for enhanced mobile data services continues to accelerate, so does the demand for private and secure mobile data communications. Mobile carriers are looking for a comprehensive solution that provides total threat management, coupled with anti-abuse services.

Threats range from infecting devices on the operator’s network to disrupting radio frequencies, creating a DoS attack and disabling the operator network.

The Problem

The operator’s network has elements that require protection at all times. The data flowing through the network can be corrupted by viruses, the communication flow can be disrupted by DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, and the Network can be hijacked by backdoor attacks on the mobile edge gateway, forcing a break in the network. The adulteration of the network results in the following:

•  Loss of revenue. Multiple users do not have the ability to communicate, with loss of voice and data.

•  Reduction in bandwidth. Bandwidth cannot be sold and operator revenue drops immediately.

•  Support Costs. Operators are the first point of contact when users have a problem with their handset or service. They are required to respond to  support calls due to fraudulent charges or denial of services. These calls can come in as surges in the event of a virus epidemic. In some instances, handsets may need to be recalled for repair.

•  Bad public image and customer churn. Service providers cannot be labeled to have an “unsecure” network.

Network operators must respond immediately to any break or interruption in service and take necessary actions to prevent the recurrence of such an event.

DoS attacks are the most common threats that network operators have to combat. Network communication points can be flooded by constant illegitimate connection requests, consuming network resources and denying authorized users from connecting to the network. These attacks can originate from an external public internet or from various mobile devices within the operator’s network.

The necessary detection and mitigation process allows operators to identify the usual suspects and setup the policy controls for future instances of the attack.

The Solution

SMobile Systems’ Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) offers a comprehensive solution that easily integrates with the operator’s existing network elements, providing a proactive approach to uniquely mobile DoS threats.

Situated between the mobile access gateway and the HA within the core network, the WIPS’ location allows it to actively monitor and intercept all questionable Mobile-to-Mobile, Mobile-to-Internet and Internet-to-Mobile traffic.

Designed with the aim of maintaining the flow of legitimate network traffic, the WIPS monitors traffic without any significant network performance impact. The WIPS has a built-in pattern matching and anomaly detection engine allowing it to detect Mobile(s) attacking the Radio Access Network, Wireless Infrastructure (GGSN/PDSN, HA, MobileIP, etc) and Internet sourced attacks on Mobile(s).

WIPS has a standardized / open logging and policy management interface for easy integration with centralized monitoring and policy management products. The WIPS seamlessly integrates with SMobile’s CoreStats reporting platform to provide detailed customizable reports, providing operators with a comprehensive view of the harmful traffic on their network.
